The Asturian Steel and Metallic Materials Technology Centre is located in the Principado de Asturias Business Park in Avilés, in one of the areas with the greatest industrial history and heritage in the region, between the Avilés estuary and the steel company Aceralia.

The building is designed as three containers wrapped in folded-sheet envelopes that house the different functions, giving expressive strength to the material’s solidity—steel sheet—with different finishes. Within these containers, the program is arranged like crystallographic boxes embedded in the folds of façades and roofs, encompassing interiors composed of several independent buildings with their own access and circulation systems.

The building is divided into three areas according to the different activities to be developed inside. The first contains reception, representation, and administrative functions. In an intermediate position lies the laboratory area, and at the rear the largest container, intended for semi-industrial workshops and facility services. The building achieves its representational character through the auditorium volume, which cantilevers over the entrance like a threshold, glazed and opening onto views of the surrounding industrial landscape.
