The Kulturola building, constructed in 1939 over the course of the Deba River, represents one of the most significant elements of Arrasate’s industrial heritage. Designed by architect Luis Astiazarán for the facilities of Unión Cerrajera, the former clock building is a unique example of Modern Movement industrial architecture in the Basque Country. Its restoration transforms this industrial legacy into a new space for cultural uses, keeping alive the relationship between industry, city, and landscape.

The intervention is based on the recognition of the building’s original values: its structure, its scale, and its close relationship with the river. The former passageway that crossed the ground floor, once an access route to the industrial complex, is now incorporated into the urban space as a large entrance threshold, an intermediate void that connects the exterior with the interior and recovers its condition as a protected meeting place.

The restoration returns the building to its industrial character by recovering the original composition of the façades, openings, and skylights, allowing the zenithal light of the upper floors to be restored. The concrete structure and its large beams remain exposed, while the building services enhance the industrial atmosphere of the complex. In addition to preserving the historic staircase, the new intervention introduces a red-tinted vertical core, evoking the iron and the activity that gave rise to the building. Thus, Kulturola preserves the memory of its past and projects it into a new era, where industrial architecture becomes a living heritage.
